AI Search Optimization: A New Era for B2B Vendor Selection

Stephen Enloe · October 4, 2026 · 9 min read

The landscape of B2B vendor selection is undergoing a profound transformation, driven by the increasing integration of AI search. While traditional SEO remains vital, businesses must now optimize for what we term 'AI Engine Optimization' (AEO) or 'Generative Engine Optimization' (GEO) to capture the attention of a new generation of buyers. Our analysis reveals that over 80% of B2B research processes, particularly for significant contracts, now begin with AI search. This shift means that optimizing content for AI visibility isn't just an advantage; it's a necessity. AI systems, despite their power, require highly structured, bullet-pointed, and explicitly annotated information to accurately cite and present your business. Businesses that provide this level of clarity are seeing rapid gains in both traditional SEO and specialized AI search citations. This structured approach, much like a digital Dewey Decimal system, ensures your offerings are precisely understood and recommended by AI, fostering a level of trust akin to a direct colleague referral. For companies accustomed to referrals or traditional marketing, embracing AI search optimization represents a critical pivot to maintain relevance and secure high-value contracts in an increasingly AI-driven marketplace.

Optimizing for AI Visibility: The New SEO Imperative

Stephen: Their traffic from AI search would go through the roof. And so while they already have all that content there, and we just need to restructure it for new websites that have near zero traffic. All we need to do is ask the right questions to create. Create that content and then we structure it as well. It's not a problem for us to go from zero to one very, very quickly and start getting honestly both SEO and AEO or A AI SEO or GEO traffic, whatever you want to call it, but traffic specifically from highly educated AI search citations. Next question is that a lot of these companies have been around for decades and they've built their business on referrals from trade shows and From colleagues and whatnot, as well as current clients. Why should they care about AI search now?

Stephen: That is, I think, one of the most interesting questions in this space.

Trade shows will always be a great way to engage with customers as long as you're going to the right ones and if it's the right industry. I can't say that for everyone. I have done a lot of a lot of marketing work previously at trade shows, at marketing events, our own tours, even of Marketing events that I've I've managed before, I've seen insane success. Those campaigns have paid for themselves 10 times over some of the times. However, you have to do them right. And that takes a certain level of expertise and a lot of energy, a lot of the time. While that will, I think, always be a certain pillar because in person events are showing to have a resurgence of importance. I would never say to stop that if that is a portion of business that is working well.

Beyond Traditional Referrals: The AI-Driven Buyer Journey

Stephen: For your company, I will say attendance to a lot of those things has gone down in the past handful of years since COVID. A lot of trade shows in a lot of different industries have taken a little bit of a backseat. People have realized that they can do a lot of business not in person and without travel and without allocating tens of thousands of dollars towards that. Attendance has gone down in a lot of those aspects. But even just taking the trade show aspect of it out of it. Referrals. People are still asking their colleagues, and that will always be a really important, important source for clients. However, part of the reason why people would always ask colleagues and always ask people in the space is because there wasn't necessarily a way that you could talk to a source specifically about your exact needs, the internet even, as specific as it is, you have to do your own research.

Stephen: You search a specific topic.

And then you go and you go down certain rabbit holes and you find things from there. AI search is it's not just a library that you're going through and you're searching for specific topics and things and you're going to the section for X, Y, and Z, and then you're doing your research. AI Search is a librarian. You are asking it very specifically for your exact need. It is giving referrals in a similar manner to what we used to rely specifically only on colleagues and other industry professionals for. A lot of times people are like the amount of people who are asking AI search for referrals within their contract searching process is growing. It's growing massively., I said this at the beginning of this video, this longer video, but if you're just watching this clip, over 80% of searching and of research processes for a new contract for a B2B vendor, over 80%.

From Zero to AI Search Citation: Accelerating Your Digital Presence

Stephen: Of those searching journeys have AI search somewhere in the pipeline. They've gone through AI search to get an answer or a recommendation. And when they do that, they're 65% more likely to take that as a useful piece of information that they would trust. 65% more likely than most other digital sources, even like traditional Google search. People are treating it like a referral. Almost as if it's a referral directly from a colleague or another industry professional., it's it's it's hard to say exactly what that exact amount in your industry is, but I can tell you that if that research is being done by an engineer, procurement officer, or somebody who's even somebody's assistant or anyone like that who's in the younger generation, who's doing any bits of just the first parts of research on what the vendors that are available are, or who is even offering this type of service, they're using AI search and they're trusting those answers more than they are anywhere else. Let's go on to the next question.

Logan: The next question is: how is AI search different from traditional SEO and Google ads for manufacturing companies? That's two different questions right there. So we'll go over the SEO portion of it first. SEO is still relevant in terms Of traditional Google search.

It's just putting you a lot further down the page, even if you're the number one search result, than if you were the number one search result in AI search. A lot of the research processes that are happening for contract manufacturing and B2B vendors, they're doing heavy research., they're spending tens of thousands, even hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars on their contracts sometimes. And so they're not just going with the first.

Logan: One, they are scrolling down a lot of the time, so they might find the top result or the top five, ten results, even for traditional search results. However, it's just that they're a lot less likely to go down there and they're less likely to sear to trust them when they do find them. The information that's being written about AI search results is so specifically annotated to people that a lot of time people just place more trust on it because it feels as though. It was written as a specific answer to them because it was. And so it just that personalization is like the difference between, sometimes you get a sales email and it's boilerplate.

Logan: And you just you see it and you immediately you think, okay, this thing is this email is to sell me something.

I might even want something in regards to that. I might be looking for that person, and it looks reputable, so maybe I would trust it even, but it's just a boilerplate email. Versus if you got a sales email from somebody who said, Hey, I looked at your website. I saw that you guys do this, this, and this. That we can do this for you because this, this, and this, our product that's for this works specifically for your blah blah. Let me know if you want to talk about that.

Logan: That sales email will probably get your attention a lot better than the absolute most boilerplate cold email that you got. And so SEO versus GEO is no different than that. Psychologically, as somebody sees something that's specifically tailored to them, they will trust it more than something that was just a generic search result for something that they searched. Specifically with within some of our clients, or maybe I'll go I'll go into one case study for one of our clients. Yeah, like this is a great stat right here. We had we had forty five leads generated, or I guess forty six technically.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do buyers use ChatGPT before choosing B2B vendors?

B2B buyers, especially those from younger generations or in procurement roles, are increasingly leveraging AI search tools like ChatGPT for their initial vendor research. They trust the summarized, specifically annotated information provided by AI, treating it almost like a direct referral from a colleague. This means companies need to ensure their content is structured and clear enough for AI to accurately cite and recommend their services, directly influencing early-stage vendor consideration.

What is AI Engine Optimization (AEO) and why is it crucial for B2B businesses?

AI Engine Optimization (AEO), also known as Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), is the process of structuring and annotating your content to be easily understood and cited by AI search systems. It's crucial for B2B businesses because these AI systems are becoming the primary research tool for potential clients. By optimizing for AEO, businesses can achieve better AI visibility, ensuring their services are accurately presented and trusted by AI, leading to high-quality traffic and potential contract opportunities.

How does content structure impact AI search optimization and visibility?

Content structure is paramount for AI search optimization. AI systems are 'insanely expensive and even inefficient' to process unstructured data, much like manufacturing without optimized practices. By using clear, bullet-pointed answers and specific annotations, businesses can create content that AI can quickly scan, understand, and cite accurately. This 'Dewey Decimal system' approach to content ensures your information is discoverable and trustworthy within AI search results, enhancing your AI visibility.

Can established companies with strong SEO benefit from AI search optimization?

Absolutely. Even companies with fantastic traditional SEO rankings and decades of referrals can significantly benefit from AI search optimization. While they may rank well on Google, AI search operates differently. Optimizing for AI ensures their established authority is recognized and accurately cited by generative AI, broadening their reach to a new segment of buyers who rely heavily on AI for their research, thereby securing 'highly educated AI search citations' and maintaining competitive advantage.

How can businesses achieve rapid gains in AI visibility and traffic?

Achieving rapid gains in AI visibility and traffic, or 'AEO traffic,' starts with intentionally structuring content for AI systems. This means providing highly specific, annotated, and often bullet-pointed information that directly answers potential queries. By focusing on this precise content delivery, businesses can go 'from zero to one very, very quickly' in securing AI search citations, attracting high-quality leads who trust AI-generated recommendations for their B2B vendor selections.
